Food preparation is done here. It must be easy to clean and sanitize. You want it to be peaceful and colorful. You need to select your counter carefully and deliberately. You want to do it right the first time as it is a major upgrade and expense. There are any choices to make in selecting kitchen counters for your home improvement project. Do you want a natural stone, an engineered stone, wood, tile, Solid Surface Acrylic or Laminate?

Natural stones have a depth and beauty of a polished surface that is hard to match, like granite, limestone, and soapstone. They must be kept cleaned, sealed and waxed as they are porous and will become discolored if not properly cared for.

An engineered stone comes in many beautiful colors and blends of rock and uses quartz as a filler and a resin to bind it together. They are very durable to heat, scratching and discoloration. It is easy to clean them do not require waxing.

Solid Surface Acrylics come in many different colors such as Corian or LG Hi-Macs, they are a fabricated counter. They are durable and easy to clean. You can take a fine sand paper of 400 grit or higher and lightly sand out the stain if the surface becomes discolored. They can be bonded together to make a seamless counter and the sink can be built into it.

Wood counters have a gorgeous look and feel to them such as teak, maple, cherry, walnut or mahogany but they require upkeep and care. You must take care of them as they can be scratched, burned or stained.

Tile counters are durable and can be assembled in many different colors, and sizes. They are easy to clean, but the grout between the tiles need to be sealed. This grout can become stained and is hard to keep clean. The tiles can be broken or chipped, so you must take care of them.

A concrete kitchen counter can be built in any shape you want. A form is built to hold the concrete until it sets. It requires knowledge and skill to make a quality counter. It must be sealed and waxed to keep it from staining.

Laminates, such as Formica or Wilsonart, have a durable surface and come in numerous styles and colors. They are easy to clean and to take care of but they can be burnt.

When you start to remodel your kitchen counter top go to Bruce Contryman’s advice on selecting a new counter top. kitchen remodeling

Stainless steel kitchen countertops are often considered for the home by those that want a clean contemporary look that requires little maintenance. No longer is it used just for commercial and restaurant kitchens. Stainless steel when used for a kitchen counter top or backsplash, whether for just a section or for the entire counter, can give any kitchen a sophisticated upscale appearance.

Besides for countertops, many kitchens are being outfitted with stainless steel tile. This is also being used for a stainless steel back splash. What that means is that the tiles are used to decorate the walls and cover behind the areas that would normally get splashed from cooking, making the area easier to keep clean. One of the reasons why stainless steel is so often used as a backsplash is because it will not corrode, which is crucial, since most other metals and woods cannot boast that same feature.

The big benefit of stainless steel for a kitchen counter top or backsplash is they are resistant to corrosion. However there are numerous other benefits, stainless steel won’t fade or chip and of course it will remain stain free. Countertops made of stainless steel are not only durable, but heat resistant, impervious to water, and resistant to gouging and denting. In the event of dents or deep scratches stainless steel countertops are easily serviceable.

Although stainless steel has been appreciated by cooks for years it is making serious inroads into the kitchens of many homes. If you think you may like the look of stainless steel, it may be worth a look and a little more investigation to find out if a stainless steel kitchen countertop makes sense for you.

Countertop Choices Are Ample To Fit Any Kitchen

By Jeanna Freeman, Memphis Commercial Appeal

Kitchen countertop options — from granite to wood — can fit any design style, purpose and budget.

Granite: Granite’s durability makes it a lifetime investment. It is a popular choice in defining elegance in today’s kitchens. It can add significant resale value to your home; it resists heat, scratches and stains (when sealed properly) and comes in a range of patterns and colors.

However, it’s pricey, and requires some maintenance (although some new sealants claim to be maintenance-free). Save money by opting for remnant slabs or using it only in certain areas. Keep in mind, granite tiles can be a less-expensive alternative and can also be used on floors, fireplaces, swimming pools, Jacuzzis and hot tub areas.

Quartz or engineered stone (a composite of 93 percent quartz particles and resin that mimics natural stone and comes in a variety of colors): This is a stain-, heat- and scratch-resistant surface with low maintenance requirements. Edges and corners can chip, and it can be expensive. (Check out Silestone or Cambria.)

Solid surfaces are durable, non-porous countertops that provide a seamless look and a choice of edges. The most familiar is Corian, but there is also Avonite and Swanstone, both available locally. Scratches can be removed by sanding; a variety of colors and patterns are available. It’s in the moderate price range. Hot pans can damage the surface.

For a green product, consider Icestone, a strong durable surface like granite, made from 75 percent recycled glass chips and material from landfills. It’s safe for food prepping and is heat resistant. It’s free of volatile organic compounds and comes in 27 colors or a customized color palette. Pricing is comparable to granite. But this is a unique product that can be installed vertically or horizontally and used for floors, showers, table and desktops.

Contemporary countertop styles lean toward the sleek, professional look of stainless steel and the modern high-tech look of concrete.

Stainless repels heat, stains and rust and gives the option for a seamless effect with an integral sink. However, it shows fingerprints, dents and scratches. Choose a grain or matte finish to make these issues less visible.

As for concrete, it will resist heat and stains if a penetrating sealant is used. Customize the look with textures and dyes. Price range is from $100 to $150 per square foot.

Laminate still remains the classic inexpensive countertop choice. This versatile surface is low-maintenance, stain and grease resistant. The price ranges from $15-$60 per running foot. Choose from a multitude of colors, patterns and textures, plus designs that mimic metals, stone and nature. Damage from cuts and hot pans makes repairs difficult.

Take time to do your homework and lay out your samples to ensure a perfect fit with cabinets and paint selections.

Because of their classy looks black travertine countertops are often considered by many home owners. Travertine is in the calcite-based family of marble and as such it’s use as a kitchen countertop is debated and generally not recommended. The reason for this is that travertine is susceptible to etching by acidic substances and foods.

In general the characteristics of Marble as a counter material, also applies to Travertine. Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of Marble and Travertine countertops for the kitchen.

Travertine Countertop Advantages

Small scratches can be buffed out of a travertine countertop
It is Usually sealed to prevent staining and etching, though this process may have to be repeated regularly.

Travertine Countertop Disadvantages

Travertine countertops can be etched by acids
Travertine also can scratch easily

(some interior designers feel travertine is suitable for kitchens. See
discussion below under “ Specific References.”)

MARBLE

Marble countetops are generally not recommended for kitchens.

Marble Countertop Advantages

The beauty and depth of color marble can be breath taking.
A smooth non stick finish is a positive characteristic of this natural stone.

Marble Countertop Disadvantages

Marble is soft.
A regular application of sealant will be required.
Marble can be etched by acids such as vinegar
It is susceptible to oil stains and rust stains,
Marble countertops can lose shine with hard wear (usually only a problem in marble
floors)
Efflorescence – appears as a white powdery residue on the surface of the stone – a reaction to water.

Marble Countertop Alternative

Serpentine, which is not a true marble, but a green marble look alike is often used in kitchens instead because it does not react to acids. However, unlike marble and travertine countertops it does not come in black.

Soapstone Countertops are composed of mineral deposits, the main mineral components in soapstone counters include talc, chlorite, dolomite and magnetite. This gives a soapstone counter top surface a warm, soft feeling to the touch. It is very durable, it is this durability that makes soapstone the countertop surface most used for science lab workstations and workbenches.

Advantages of Soapstone Countertops

*Soapstone is natural
*It offers a warmer feel than granite or marble
*Soapstone Will not burn or stain
*It is much easier to cut and shape than marble or granite and is used by artisans
*Soapstone is inert, this means that acids and alkalis will not etch the surface
*The joints of a soapstone counter top can be made invisible

Soapstone Countertop Disadvantages

*Soapstone will require the frequent application of mineral oil to maintain patina –
otherwise it will turn a light grey until it ages.
*It is soft and can be prone to chipping
*Soapstone slabs are smaller than granite slabs, so more joints are required

Especially for a softer and warm feel soapstone may be a choice to check out. You will
find the surface, even though even though it has been used for centuries in traditional and country kitchens, is attractive and lends itself to contemporary kitchen design as well as.
If you are considering a natural countertop material unique and natural stone soapstone countertops are worth a look.

Taking proper care of the granite countertop you purchased for your kitchen or bathroom is prudent since it is more than just a surface it is also an investment, one that will give you decades of beautiful service. Granite or stone is a natural product and simple care and maintenance will keep it looking luxurious. Here are some tips for basic granite counter top care and cleaning:

Clean granite counter surfaces with a few drops of neutral cleaner (non acidic), stone soap or a mild liquid dish washing detergent and warm water. For best results use a clean cloth or rag. Don’t over apply cleaners, too much cleaner or soap may leave a film and cause streaks. Remember non-acidic products, do not use products that contain lemon, vinegar or other acids on the granite the high acid content may etch the surface. Rinse the granite counter surface thoroughly after washing with the soap solution and dry with a soft cloth. Changing the rinse water frequently. Do not use scouring powders or creams; these products contain abrasives that may scratch the surface finish.

Bath and Other Wet Areas In the bathroom or other wet areas, soap scum can be minimized by using a squeegee after each use. To remove soap scum, use a non-acidic soap scum remover. Frequent or over use of an ammonia solution may eventually dull the surface of the stone.

Things to do: Do dust surfaces frequently Do clean surfaces with mild detergent or stone soap Do thoroughly rinse and dry the surface after washing. Do blot up spills immediately. Don’ts: Do not use vinegar, lemon juice or other cleaners containing acids. Do not use cleaners that contain acid such as bathroom cleaners, grout cleaners or tub & tile cleaners. Do not use abrasive cleaners such as dry cleansers or soft cleansers. Do not mix bleach and ammonia; this combination creates a toxic and lethal gas.

Simply using these granite care and cleaning tips will ensure that your granite kitchen counter top or granite bathroom vanity countertop looks good for as long as it lasts.

Tile kitchen countertops offer a lot of design flexibility at a low cost, however there are also some drawbacks. Tile is available in a huge variety of colors, patterns, textures, sizes and prices, from mass-produced 4-in. sq. field tile to hand-painted works of art Installed prices start at about $15 per sq. ft. for a basic countertop and go up from there. Loose field tile starts at less than $2 per sq. ft

Porcelain tile, ceramic tile and glazed tiles have a outer layer like glass this makes them long wearing, highly heat resistant and non-absorbent. Tile can be set on a mortar bed or over cement backerboard with thin set mortar. Tiles can be formed into kitchen countertops of almost any size or shape since it is easy to cut. The replacement of damaged tiles is as easy as chiseling out the damaged area and replacing the tile.

However, there are some drawbacks to installing tile for your counters top. Tile is very hard and china or glassware that falls on it are not, the result, the tile will be ok. Since tile kitchen countertops are made of many pieces, the counter surface will most likely not be completely flat, requiring a cutting board be placed on it.

Probably the biggest downfall to using tile is the grout between the tile. Cement based grout stains easily and can be difficult to clean if left untreated. Epoxy grout is a good option. It’s good at resisting stains. But over time epoxy grout yellows, especially when exposed to sunlight.

Installing tile for your kitchen countertop will offer you design versatility, durability. It will be pretty much stain resistant and impervious to heat. One of the biggest pluses is that the option of tile kitchen countertops can be done inexpensively.

At a time when ‘green’ is the trend, butcher block is one of your few completely natural kitchen countertop materials. Typically made from strips of hard maple, 1 1/2-in. thick
butcher block counters are glued up to expose wear resistant edge grain. They can be ordered in sizes up to 12 ft. long and 4 ft. wide for about $30 to $35 per sq. ft.

Easy to find butcher block countertop material can be found and purchased through your local home center or lumberyard and there are some large manufacturers that you can order from also. One of them, John Boos & Company, also makes end-grain tops
4 in. thick in sizes up to 60 in. by 38 in. for about $85 per sq. ft.

A butcher block countertop also offers several inherent benefits, besides being natural, for instance; it is relatively easy to work and install, butcher block also has a visual warmth and pleasing resilience, and can be used can act as a built in cutting board.

Even the blemishes of a butcher block countertop add to its appeal and charm. Scratches, scorch marks and other signs of wear and tear can be counted as character, or scraped and sanded away. One drawback is that wood is susceptible to water damage, so
butcher block used around the sink should be carefully sealed. While many are turning to natural stone like granite for their counter top material the warmth and character offered by butcher block kitchen countertops can not be beat. Besides offering you good looking natural alternative a butcher block countertop can be expected to last for decades.

Apparently more often than not kitchen cabinets and counter tops are the focus of homeowners who are considering remodeling, along with flooring. Though they of course may think about other elements, a survey shows cabinets and counters top the list.

This is what was discovered in a recent survey conducted by ReliableRemodeler.com, a leading home remodeling resource for homeowners providing a trusted connection between homeowners and local contractors. “Regardless of whether they were in the midst of a kitchen remodel, or simply thinking about one, cabinets, countertops and flooring were the three features homeowners cited as being the most important.

For home owners that were presently remodeling 35 percent were replacing their kitchen cabinets, 24 percent were changing their flooring, and 21 percent were updating their kitchen counter tops. Other popular elements were new appliances, a change of paint and replacing sinks.

“It’s no surprise that these areas are most important to homeowners,” Eric Doebele, CEO of ReliableRemodeler, stated. “Cabinets and countertops are the most used area of the kitchen, so homeowners usually think of replacing these features first. Well designed cabinet and counter space is the most important element of making a kitchen efficient and enjoyable, and can provide the largest return on investment.”

When planning to remodel their kitchen, 76 percent of homeowners simply chose to replace or update specific elements , such as their kitchen countertops and cabinets. Only 24 percent of homeowners with kitchen remodeling projects stated that they would be creating an entirely new kitchen from scratch.

ReliableRemodeler.com is a leading nationwide home improvement contractor referral service working to bring together homeowners and contractors.

Some of the more popular choices for kitchen countertop materials to compare are old standards like Granite, Formica and Corian, however there are new choices for kitchen countertops gaining in popularity such as Luxore, a non-porous heat and chip resistant stone, and Swanstone, a reinforced surface with seamless joints. Swanstone is moisture resistant and requires no fabricated edges, are becoming increasing popular.

But, Granite continues to reign as one of the most popular kitchen countertop surface materials. Kitchen designers and businesses claim that demand for the substance is spurred by its fairly inexpensive cost, which is competitive with Corian and quartz.
A survey, comparing the popularity of countertop materials, recently done by the National Kitchen and Bath Association of 22,000 re-modelers, according to market research manager Ed Pell, showed that granite accounted for 30% of counter tops, laminate 33% and solid surface accounted for 16% this includes quartz and corian. However other surfaces for countertops are becoming popular with more trendy remodelers who are requesting stainless steel or copper for kitchen counter top surfaces.

For people that want an upscale appearance in their kitchens, that are not too busy and who are generally neat, granite kitchen countertops are a great choice. Soapstone for counter tops are a good selection in kitchens that are not used frequently. A top alternative for kitchens where cooking is done frequently is Quartz. Solid Surface, including Corian, Avonite and Swanstone are excellent kitchen counter surface choices for that busy, frequently used kitchen that will have a good amount of cooking in it.

Relative costs vary, by counter top material, company and even by region. To find the best counter top surface and cost for your kitchen it wouldn’t hurt and might help to consult a kitchen design or remodeling professional. An online search though will yield a wealth of ideas, information and price quotes for preliminary research with no obligation. What ever you do have fun in choosing and designing while you compare kitchen countertop materials.

You will probably find a laminate countertop in the kitchen of more homes than any other surface. This is not an accident. It is comparatively easy to install, it is inexpensive and available in a array of patterns and colors. Besides, laminate resists stains, water, and mild abrasions very well, but it will scorch if you put a hot pan on it and can be chipped or scratched by knives. One possible detraction is there is no repairing it in this case replacement is required.

The choice of a more expensive color through or solid core laminates are available, these are similar to conventional laminate but the color is solid all the way through the material. Unsightly black edges are eliminated at joints and you can create decorative effects by routing the edges of solid-core laminate.

Besides solid colors you can find a laminate countertop surface that offers the look of stone, leather or wood, as well as patterns and visual textures to create stunningly good appearances. Small-scaled speckled patterns are popular today on laminate counter tops, and they easily camouflage minor scratches and spots. There is even a manufacturer that offers laminate with built in antibacterial protection, they claim it will not wash out and it keeps bacteria, mildew, and mod from growing on your counter top.

If you are considering going the route of laminate for your kitchen countertop be aware that it comes in various grades. Since it is generally affordable don’t skimp by purchasing the cheapest grade available. Get your money’s worth, purchase the highest quality, which will not chip easily and retains its good looks longer. Unless you have a serious burn or scratch on the surface your laminate countertop will probably last for ten to fifteen years.

You are ready to choose the countertops for your kitchen. You have looked at so many samples that your head is spinning but one seems to be stuck. Granite tile counter tops seem to speak out a little louder than all the other ones you have seen.

One reason this type of countertop is used is because the tiles are cheaper than an actual slab of granite. Due to the durability of granite you won’t have to replace your countertops as often as you have done in the past. These tiles can be laid out to look just like a solid piece of granite.

Granite is made of cooled molten rock with crystallization above or below the surface. The colors can range from pink to black. When in its natural state it is huge. Because of its size it is used in construction. Granite is not specific to one certain region however the commercial grade granite can be found in Africa, Sweden, Finland, and Spain among other areas of the world.

Granite contains minerals which formed when the molten rock cooled. Depending on how fast it cooled is what determines the unique patterns that are formed. When it cools rapidly the minerals form smaller patterns and the opposite is true when it cools slowly. Polished granite is shiny while honed granite has a softer look.

If you have ever laid tile you can install a granite countertop. The steps are basically…(Read More)

Cabinets: $10,000-$80,000
• Trends: Mixed woods and finishes with lots of bells and whistles like designer hoods and extensive moldings. There’s also a huge movement to the “green” side of things, like cabinets manufactured with urea-free formaldehyde. European-style frameless cabinet boxes are another trend, as are glass-front doors.
• Cost: Price range is from $10,000 up to $80,000 or more, depending on type of cabinet — box vs. custom made — and kitchen size.
• Budget: Allow 40 percent to 50 percent of overall remodeling budget for cabinets.
Appliances: $6,000-$40,000
• Trends: High-end commercial grade (if you can afford it) stainless steel. The more efficient and energy-saving, the better. And gas cook tops continue to be more popular than electric.
• Cost: A complete appliance package will start around $6,000 for standard appliances up to $40,000 plus for commercial high- end products. Why such a big discrepancy? Brand affects the price. An energy-efficient Maytag refrigerator costs about $1,200, compared to a custom-panel Sub-Zero refrigerator that’s about $12,000.
• Budget: Allow 20 percent to 30 percent of your budget for appliances.
Countertops: $35-$80 per square foot
• Trends: Solid surfaces remain the preferred choice. And with the huge growth of imports and less expensive look-alikes on the market, adding granite has become an option for almost any budget.
• Cost: You need to really look at your budget. Do you want granite? Marble? Concrete? Laminate? The options are endless, and the price range is wide. A typical laminate countertop in an average-sized kitchen can run $35 to $40 a square foot, whereas a solid hunk of granite runs about $80, depending on the particular piece.
• Budget: Allow 20 percent to 25 percent of your budget for countertops…(more)…

Soapstone Countertops though gaining in popularity are not very well known because soapstone is not widely marketed because of the durability offered and its unique rich look. Soapstone is a actually a naturally occuring mineral (steastite) that is mined just like marble or granite for instance, but with unique properties that make it ideal for kitchen countertops that these two lack. It is the style it offers, ease of maintenance, plus the ability to easily carve and cut that has Soapstone kitchen Counter Tops making a resurgence with designers and homeowners alike.

Though Soapstone is mined in quarries all over the world, in early America it was quarried mainly in Vermont. The amazing beauty and durability of soapstone was quickly recognized by the early Americans who shaped it for use as sinks, fireplaces hearths and all types of work surfaces. It was also used for its decorative qualities. In fact because it carves so easily, with standard wood and masonry cutting tools, soapstone is a favorite of artisans.

Engineered stone countertops have many qualities that make it a increasingly popular countertop choice. One of those qualities is not the price. Even though engineered stone is man made, mostly of quartz, its price is on par with natural stone. However, it has a homogenous look that is not as natural as stone. It’s without the veins or fissures and other flaws that could compromise quality.

Because it is available in many more colors, even custom, than natural stone, engineered stone allows for more flexiblity in decorating. There is a greater evenness in it’s patterning, and color matching is easy. So, if you should need to acquire more engineered kitchen countertop surface the exact same tone, pattern and shade can be ordered and installed without a problem. The same can not be said for natural stone.

Engineered stone’s durability is also greater. It is non porous as well as scratch and stain resistant. Which means for upkeep any household cleaner will do for routine cleaning and maintenace. Waxing and sealing are not required. And some engineered stone products are manufactured to resist bacteria, mold and mildew. In addition to it’s other good qualities engineered stone is burn resistant, but it could be damaged with prolonged exposure to high heat

As another surface option for countertops, supplies many benefits that natural stone does not offer. Give it a look who knows an engineered stone kitchen counter top may offer the flexibility, style and cost that you need.

Mixing different elements is not new to kitchen design. Actually mixing and matching various kitchen cabinet stains, heights, stains and woods has been around for years and seems to be re-gaining popularity among homeowners, with aesthetically pleasing results.

When it comes to your kitchen’s design the use of mixing elements can be done to great effect. It is becoming common to use two different woods, glaze and/or stain colors on walls and base cabinets, with an accompanying third color, stain or glaze treatment on island cabinetry.
Contrasting dark and light colors are proving to be homeowners’ choices in kitchen designs.

Another popular trend is using cabinetry to blend a kitchen with an adjoining family room. Some homeowners are extending built in cabinetry into the family room. Like using cabinetry around a plasma TV that matches the kitchen cabinets. Doing this makes the kitchen appear larger.

While mixing and matching countertop materials is another design element being used with good results. For instance, the use of a granite countertop that is dark in color for the kitchen island to add flair, with a more subtle kitchen countertop for the perimeter.

Overall using materials and colors, on your kitchen cabinets and countertops, that contrast and/or complement one another you can give your kitchen a one of a kind personalized and stylish touch.
